Blessingway
Information on
how to host a Blessingway, a symbolic alternative to the traditional
baby shower. Usually hosted before a woman goes into labor, but can be
done afterwards for the transition into motherhood. Its roots are from
the Navaho and help prepare women for the journey ahead. I do mine with
a Christian approach. It is a beautiful way to honor womanhood,
motherhood and femininity. The mother is nurtured and blessed.
Birth Beads
A
tradtition from Africa, birth beads were hung from the rafters of the
birthing hut and as each woman went in to give birth she could hang
onto the rafters and/or beads. Doing so gave her strenghth and
confidence to do the work of birthing.
Today it is a strand
of "beads" (or trinket or bauble or some other such item) that is
passed from one pregnant mother to another so she can gather her
strength before going into labor. Each mother adds her own item with
the understanding that whatever she places on the strand must be
something she is willing to let go of just as we let go of our
children later in life. It is ideally something that "speaks" to the
mother that she is willing to share.
Temporarily having the
"beads" encourages a woman as she has tangible evidence of others who
have preceeded her. She knows she can get through birth.
After
the birth of the baby the mother writes her story in a journal that is
also shared along with the "beads." Women love to read about birth and
this is also encouraging.
As the keeper of the beads (and journal) I keep track of who has them and keep them safe in between births.
